On Demand Delivery - It's what they all want and That's Erda's Bag!

It's in all the media- Stores are reacting to the economic news by maintaining a tighter control of their inventory. This requires that they choose vendors who can deliver on demand, so they can order not just closer to their need, but when they are almost sold out!

For small U.S. makers of crafts, this has been a challenge. Those who are able to ship within a few days of receiving an order are at a decided advantage. Historically these businesses required 4 to 8 weeks to make the product to order. That's not working for today's buyers.

Jeff and Stephanie Schorr of the Craftsman House in St. Petersburg, Florida, are typical of the successful buyer today. In Niche Magazine (Winter 2010) they say, "We closely monitor our monthly numbers and adjust immediately...We prebook less, and anticipate ordering 'at once' inventory as needed." Ann Harmon, of From Our Hands in Des Moines, Iowa, agrees. "I order minimum amounts so as not to tie up too much cash, and I don't purchase from artists with high minimums." Lorrie Frost of Accessories Magazine says, in her editorial (January 2010) "Deliveries are being planned much closer to the season. Delivery dates will be more frequent."

Fortunately for Erda, a small producer of arty handbags in central Maine, production has always included stocking the best sellers for immediate delivery. As the customers have ordered with less and less lead time, Erda has responded by beefing up supplies of the pieces demanded most: Small bags in contemporary fabrics from $10 up, and deerskin ones from $24 up.

Equipped with a portable phone and a big bin, Erda's staff wanders among the plentiful finished goods and describes and picks orders for the caller. As long as the caller can be a bit flexible, an order can ship the next day! New accounts have reported that they can't wait for a competitor to ship, and so are switching vendors.
